Does this scene from "Two Boats and a Helicopter" Inform Us of What's To Come in S2?

Does this dream sequence from Season 1, Episode 3, "Two Boats and a Helicopter," inform us of where things are headed in Season 2?

“Are they burning in there? Why isn’t anybody doing anything?” - Young Nora

While Matt was unconscious in a hospital bed, these words were uttered by a Young Nora during Matt's dream sequence.  Matt once again paid the price for being a good samaritan after coming to the aid of a couple GR members who were being pelted by rocks. But during his unconscious state, Matt revisited his life's most traumatic experiences (e.g. his leukemia diagnosis, Mary's car accident) as well as the scene above where he, along with Nora, knowingly watched their parents and family home go up in flames.

So, with Season 2 focusing a great deal on keeping the family unit together (Kevin, Nora, Jill and Lily) as well as the purchase of a new family home in Miracle, Texas, will Matt's open declaration of faith cost Nora her family's home in a similar fashion?  Nora just so happens to live NEXT DOOR to a "firefighter" who burns down the homes of those who go against his mandate to keep their belief or faith in miracles on the down low.

Despite reluctantly agreeing at first, Matt later ignored John's orders to lie about Mary's awakening when he openly challenged John by giving him his wristband back and saying that he'd be return to "talk" with John once Mary woke up again.  Unfortunately for Matt, he probably doesn't know about the lengths that John will go to in order to keep miracle workers/believers quiet.

Matt probably thinks that he's protected by being in the encampment area outside the park, especially with Mary in the care of Kevin and Nora.  However, what Matt doesn't know is that Kevin may also be in danger once the Mercedes-handprint connects him to the scene of Evie's disappearance.  If Kevin is in danger, they're all in danger.

But, thanks to the encampment area outside the park, Matt has found his purpose again, which is to inspire people and reclaim Miracle for everyone who wants its "gift."  To begin the episode, Matt watched a few "runners" from camp raid Miracle National Park. Eventually, he'll be the one to lead them all as part of the reclamation of Miracle.

This brief post is meant to be a discussion so have at it in the comment section.

Will we see another house fire, only in Miracle, and with an older incarnation of Matt and Nora? Or, have we "been there, done that" as far as arson-based climaxes are concerned?

  1. I completely agree with your post. Matt has been in this perpetual state of despair since the departure. Taking care of Mary has taken a toll on him, Matt's soul has been burned. The answer of John Murphy going after Kevin is a matter of when, not if. Matt and Nora would do anything to protect the ones they love. I don't think the Garvey/Durst family will perish in a fire, but maybe they will try to get out and Mary might be left behind. Hopefully, that won't happen but it's a possibility. Matt left Mary because he knew she would be safe with Nora. The arson based climaxes are not overdone. In fact, it serves the show very well.

    1. Thanks for your feedback, Shaquita. Yeah, I don't think any of the main characters will die in the potential $3M house fire, but the thought of Mary dying in it has crossed my mind. Again, Matt THOUGHT she'd be safe there, but with Kevin's Evie connection, safety is completely up in the air.

    2. Thanks for replying. I love Matt Jamison. He always has the best of intentions. Leaving Mary with Nora and Kevin was a good idea if Matt was going to go repent for his sins. Mary is an innocent bystander in Matt's hectic existence. I believe Matt blames himself for Mary's condition. I mean, you don't move someone after an accident! (Especially if you don't know the state of their injury.) Matt is a devoted husband but you can tell he feels guilty and he feels punished. He's always ALMOST in the clear, but he gets caught up. I like your idea about him and Nora standing outside of a house on fire happening again, possibly in Miracle. Very smart, B :)
